The Washington Post reports on June 4, 2014 that two bases of the Ukraine army and stormtrooper militia outside the city of Luhansk have fallen to self-defense forces following several days of intense fighting. The fighting included deployment of fighter aircraft by the Kyiv regime and its NATO allies. Luhansk city center was bombed by aircraft.
The two complexes lost were a building housing a Ukrainian national guard regiment near the city of Luhansk and a border guard base just outside Luhansk. The Post says a YouTube video shows the fall of the border guard bases. Ukrainian troops in civilian clothes filed out past watchful rebels and carrying tote bags containing their belongings.
In vists to Poland two days ago, U.S. President Barak Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper have pledged to step up military assistance to Ukraine. The United States has said that it will send Kiev an additional $5 million in equipment, including body armor, night-vision goggles and communications gear.
Yesterday in Brussels, the G8 group of imperialist powers made similar pledges.
Interim President Oleksandr Turchynov has asked Ukraine’s Security and Defense Council to impose martial law in the east of the country. His regime has already reinstated compulsory military service.
